Online vs high street

Which is actually cheaper?

Online retailers typically run 15-30% below high-street chains for the same tyre. The reason is overheads. Online sellers run warehouses; chains run hundreds of retail centres. Both end up at the same fitter for the actual job, but you pay differently for getting there.

Buy online if…

  • +You want the lowest price
  • +You know your size and preferred brand
  • +You are happy booking a fitting slot online
  • +You like comparing every option in your size

Use a chain if…

  • +You need tyres same-day
  • +You are unsure what size or brand to pick
  • +You want face-to-face advice
  • +You prefer one point of contact for any problems

Mobile fitting

Tyres on your driveway

Mobile fitters bring everything (machine, balancer, weights) to your home or workplace. £5-15 per tyre over a standard garage fit. Asda Mobile starts from £6 per tyre. Booking windows are typically 2-hour slots.

  • +No travel, no waiting room
  • +Full set in 30-60 minutes
  • -Cannot always do alignment
  • -Some won't do run-flats on-site

Costco trick

Often cheapest on premium

Costco typically beats every other UK retailer on premium brands like Michelin, Continental and Bridgestone, and bundles fitting, balancing, lifetime rotation and a road-hazard warranty. The catch: you need a £35/year membership and there are only 30 warehouses, mostly near major cities.

Worked example. A Michelin Primacy 4 in 205/55 R16 fits at Costco for around £95. Same tyre at Blackcircles for around £115. On a set of 4, that is roughly £80 saved, more than enough to cover the membership.

When in the year is cheapest?

UK tyre demand is seasonal. Garages flex price and slot availability accordingly.

Best windows to buy

  • January. Post-Christmas, garages quiet, deals chase footfall.
  • August-September. Pre-autumn, retailers clearing summer stock.
  • Black Friday. Halfords and Blackcircles run big tyre promos.

Worst windows to buy

  • October-November. Pre-winter rush, highest demand, least flex on price.
  • Bank holiday weekends. Garages at capacity, zero negotiating room.
  • MOT month. Garages know you have to sort it.
